Background of the Study

Youth participation in community development is essential for fostering sustainable progress and ensuring the inclusion of diverse perspectives in decision-making. However, youth involvement in Kwande Local Government Area (LGA), Benue State, is often constrained by a lack of effective communication strategies to mobilize and engage them. Development communication bridges this gap by promoting awareness, fostering collaboration, and encouraging active involvement in community initiatives. Various studies have highlighted the role of participatory communication in enhancing youth contributions to community development projects (Adeoye & Mohammed, 2024). This study examines the impact of communication on youth participation in Kwande LGA.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the availability of community development programs in Kwande LGA, youth participation remains low due to limited access to information, weak communication channels, and inadequate mobilization strategies. This lack of engagement hampers the effectiveness of development efforts. The potential of communication as a tool to enhance youth participation has not been fully explored in this context. This study investigates how communication strategies can address these challenges and improve youth involvement in community development initiatives.

  1. Development communication significantly increases youth awareness of community development programs.

  2. Effective communication strategies lead to higher youth participation in development initiatives.

  3. Participatory communication improves youth engagement and contribution to community projects.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study provides insights into how communication can foster youth participation in community development, benefiting policymakers, community leaders, and development practitioners. Its findings offer practical recommendations for designing effective engagement strategies in Kwande LGA and beyond.
